The best (and smallest) seat in the house.
Whether you're creating a reading nook, in need of additional seating or need to fill a corner, a small armchair offers a stylish solution. From leather armchairs with an industrial edge to plush tub chairs with rich velvet upholstery, every room in the house could use an extra place to sit.
Forget large or bulky styles with imposing silhouettes, and opt for slim armchairs that use a streamlined design. A small armchair is not only ultra-practical but it also adds visual interest to your interior – a must-have in any home, we think.
Rooms where you either relax or entertain (or both), will always benefit from additional seating, especially when it's as unobtrusive as a petite armchair. Vicki Foster, in-house stylist at ScS, explains: 'A small armchair can be used to create a mini focal point in the living room. Positioning it in a corner opposite the sofa ensures the two items aren't competing for attention.
'Bedrooms are also a great place for a small armchair, as their size means they won’t consume too much of the room and fight with the bed for space. It also helps transform the bedroom from a room for sleeping into somewhere you can sit and relax in dedicated seating.'
Small armchairs also suit home offices particularly well. Place at the opposite end of your working desk and it becomes a comfortable spot to sit and unwind after wrapping up work at the end of each day.
One of the best things about armchairs in general is that they come in every style and colour imaginable, and small designs are no different. You can go as avant-garde or traditional as you like.
'Modern chairs that combine materials and offer a contemporary look are popular at the minute, along with ones that echo mid-century design,' says Vicki. 'If you prefer a more classic look, options are available that use studded and high backs to embody the traditional reading chair style we see throughout period design.
'When it comes to materials, again, there are plenty to choose from. Leather, velvet, and cotton tend to be very popular across the board.'
Despite their use as accent pieces, the first and foremost role of any chair is to provide a comfy place to sit. With that in mind, elevate their appeal by increasing their cosiness and comfort factor with the addition of soft furnishings.
The experts at TBCo, say: 'Blankets are great for draping over the edge of an armchair. You can really introduce your style into a space with soft furnishings – for example, if you have a plain coloured chair, add a pop of colour or bold design with checks or gingham. Or, if you've gone for a patterned chair, balance it with a plain blanket that adds softness to your room. A knee or small blanket is the perfect size for subtle armchair decor – and for curling up under with a good book and a brew, of course.'
